HOME FOR THE AGED
The "Abdullah Shooker Jewish Welfare Home", residence
for the seniors/elders, at Wilkie Road, currently houses members
of the Singapore Jewish community, in considerable comfort, who
enjoy privacy, dignity, security and as much independence as possible. The name Abdullah Shooker Home is derived from a prominent member
of the local Jewish community who lived here in the 1920s.
He was a successful merchant of Iraqi origin and a generous man.
He married, but had no children and when he and his wife died, their
considerable fortune was left in Trusts for charitable work in Singapore
and the Palestine of his days.
After years in a dilapidated state, the Abdullah Shooker Jewish Welfare Home was refurbished and renovated in 1989.
A medical doctor visits the Home weekly. A dedicated supervisor,
assisted by two housekeepers-cum-nurses have been hired to provide
housekeeping and laundry services, as well as to assist the folk
who are too frail.
All meals are provided for the occupants. Some of the local Jewish
families have warmheartedly arranged to cook and deliver food on
weekdays.
The needs of the residents are met by the kindness and generosity
of The Jewish Community which includes medical treatment, hospitalization,
regular medical check-ups and even dialysis equipment.
